Oseberg Viking LongboatThe Oseberg Viking Longboat is famous amongst model ship enthusiasts due to its history. The remnants of this Viking ship are said to have been stumbled upon by Knut Rom, in 1903, who was a farmer at that time. He then visited Professor Gabriel Gustafson and told him of his findings. In 1904 an excavation team was lead by this professor and all the remains of the ship uncovered. The Oseberg Viking Longboat sat partially exposed for many months while excavation was carried out. A fence and signs were erected to ensure that the growing interested crowds didn’t interfere with the ship as it was worked on. To many it is shocking that it took 21 years for the ship to be fully pieced back together and restored. Those working on restoration tried to include as much of the original wood as possible. Its stern had the finest and most intricate carvings known from the Viking times. All wood from the original ship was treated, then steamed and pressed back into its original shape. Once restored the ship was moved to the Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy. This particular Viking ship has caused interest in many model ship collectors and is stocked by many companies, including The Model Shipyard.
