The Constitution USS model ship – birth of the real ship The real ship on which our Constitution USS model ship is based was built in Boston from local timbers and armed with cannons cast in Rhode Island and copper fastenings provided by Paul Revere. Her mission was to defend the young American nation, making her as old the historic document for which she was named by George Washington and Congress. Launched in Boston on 21 October 1797 and first put to sea in 1798, she has remained part of the U.S. Navy since that day. The Constitution USS model ship – travels of the real ship This history of the real ship on which our Constitution USS model ship is based is an illustrious one. From her first mission in the late 1790s guarding American commerce in the Caribbean, to protecting American ships in the Mediterranean and numerous battles thereafter, she proved her seafaring mettle. After two Mediterranean cruises she was reported unseaworthy and condemned to be broken up in 1830, but was instead bought to Newport, Rhode Island during the Civil War to serve as a training ship for Naval Academy midshipmen. In recognition of her centennial, she was brought back to Boston in 1897, refitted for display and, in 1905, became a national monument, making her the oldest commissioned warship still afloat in the world.
