Both come in two dimensions: 1:48, with an overall length of 1,153mm and height of 959mm and 1:78, with an overall length of 730mm and height of 550mm. Both renditions of the Bluenose model ship were built from copies of the original plans and are painted in the original colours. The Bluenose model ship – birth of the real ship The original ship on which our Bluenose model ship I is modelled was a Canadian schooner from Nova Scotia, ‘bluenose’ being a term that originated as a nick-name for Nova Scotians. She was launched at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on 26 March 1921 as a racing ship, fishing vessel and a symbol of the province. A long and illustrious racing career followed and an image of Bluenose, under full sail, is portrayed on the 1929 Canadian Bluenose postage stamp, two other stamps issued in 1982 and 1999, and also on the current Nova Scotia licence plate. The depiction of a generic schooner on the Canadian dime which, for years been commonly known as ‘the Bluenose’, was officially declared to be her by the Government of Canada in 2002. Her daughter, on which our Bluenose model ship II is based, was launched at Lunenburg on 24 July 1963 and serves as a goodwill ambassador, tourist attraction and symbol of the province. She visits ports surrounding Nova Scotia during summer and, in honour of her majestic predecessor, does not officially race. Contact us now for more information on our Bluenose model ship I or II. |
