The Model Shipyard Builds The Best Quality Model Ships

Where do you find the best quality model ships? Can you distinguish between poor and good quality? There are many considerations when buying a model ship and if you make a study of them and know what to look out for, you would not be easily misled by unscrupulous importers of poor quality, mass production model ships from China. Good quality models all share certain characteristics. At The Model Shipyard, we are not interested in good quality; we want to build the best quality model ships.

That is why it can take us up to ten weeks to build a model, and do not let any model shipbuilder tell you it is possible to build the best in a short time. It all starts with the research, and establishing exactly what the original ship had looked like. Our designs are computer-aided to enable us to easily up- or downscale a design – we can build them in any size you want. The lofting is very sturdy, so the ship will maintain its shape faithfully in humid or dry climates and the planking is built plank-by-plank.

Some ships had featured copper plating beneath the waterline to combat the Toredo worm and marine growth on the hull. Our models’ copper plating is done in the same pattern of the original ships and it is a painstaking job to treat each of a thousand individual little copper plates for that tarnished, antique appearance, and then attach them one-by-one. We employ a full-time fine artist to sculpt the figureheads and metal ornaments in oversize clay before reducing them to scale using a 3D pantograph. They are then moulded in aluminium or bronze using a cold cast process for superior detail reproduction.

This is only a glimpse into the way we build the best quality model ships at The Model Shipyard. For more information, feel free to contact us.
