Schooner ships were first used by the Dutch around the 16th Century. A schooner is a sailing ship with fore-and-aft sails on two or more masts; the forward mast(s) being the same height or shorter than the rear mast(s). North America started building schooners in the 18th Century. The Bluenose is an excellent example of a schooner. We build the Bluenose model in 1:78 and 1:48 scale models. It was a hard-working fishing vessel but also a celebrated racing ship. For at least 17 years, from 1921, no challenger could defeat Bluenose and it retained the International Fishermen’s Trophy. America was a 180-ton schooner that was built in 1851 for the express purpose of racing. It features a delightful sharp, wedge-shaped bow and masts raked at 14 degrees; this elegant schooner can now be appreciated in your living room, because we build the model to be an exact replica of the original.
