Stephens & Kenau Builds Model Maritime Antiques

Model shipbuilding is treacherous territory. Many builders claim to build Museum Quality model ships, but very few can deliver on the promise, or meet the requirements set out by the Smithsonian Institution. Stephens & Kenau™ builds true replicas of maritime antiques, indistinguishable in every way except size. This is the true mark of Museum Quality model ships – they should not just resemble those grand old maritime antiques, they should be identical replicas.

The only way you can acquire a true Museum Quality model ship is by commissioning it directly from a model shipbuilder like Stephens & Kenau. Off-the-shelf model ships are often built in China to desperately approximate standards, yet dealers may charge exorbitant prices for them. You will always end up paying a vastly inflated price when buying from a dealer or an agent and you may still get a poor quality model ship.

Stephens & Kenau’s exhaustive research means that we can recreate a true maritime antique faithfully, down to the colours, shades and even the thickness of the ropes and the type and frequency of knots in the standing rigging. In addition, we have never seen any other model shipbuilders in the world recreate sails as lifelike as we do. Our cotton sails are shaped to appear as if they are billowing in the wind, bringing the model to life and making it seem as if it is in motion. We have developed a special machine to shape our sails.

For faithful replicas of classic maritime antiques, Stephens & Kenau is beyond compare. We can finish it to appear brand-new, as it was on the day it was launched, or weathered, to lend a well-used air of a ship in her workaday. For more information, contact us today!
